How to Write YouTube Scripts That Keep Viewers Hooked

Audience retention is the single most important metric on YouTube. If you can keep people watching past the first 30 seconds, the algorithm will reward you with millions of impressions. But how do you actually write a script that achieves this?

1. The 5-Second Hook

Your viewer decides whether to stay or click away in the first 5 seconds. Your hook must immediately validate the title and thumbnail. Do not introduce yourself. Do not say "welcome back to my channel." Jump straight into the conflict, the value proposition, or the bizarre statement that makes them need to know more.

2. The Intro (Foreshadowing)

Once you've hooked them, you need to tell them exactly what they are going to get if they stay until the end of the video. "By the end of this video, you'll know exactly how to..." is a classic, effective structure.

3. The Body (Pacing & Pattern Interrupts)

Long blocks of text are boring. Break your script down into clear, distinct chapters. Every 30 to 45 seconds, there should be a "pattern interrupt"—a change in tone, a B-roll visual cue written into the script, a joke, or a transition. 4. The CTA (Call to Action)

Never ask for a subscribe at the very beginning. The viewer doesn't know you yet. 5. The End Screen Handoff

Do not say "Well, that's it for today" or "Thanks for watching." The moment you signal the video is over, retention plummets.
